The Cost of Custom Software
Price Range: $20k
Small Apps are rather limited, generally consisting of a few screens, with little to no integrations. Software functionality is also limited simple features. Apps developed at this 20k price range may include apps used by small businesses to convey simple information, such as locations, special offers, etc. Anything that involves a user login is generally beyond the scope of this price range.
Medium Sized Apps
Price Range: $20k-$50k
Medium Sized Apps generally expand the scope of a project to 15-30 screens. Often within the $20,000-50,000 price range these apps can include: basic integrations, as well as user logins/accounts. Projects at this range may also include basic internal business tools or user-facing apps with small potential userbases. We have a few education clients in this price range that are conveying information used for learning with small user groups. The higher price also generally allows for a longer design phase, with more attention paid to the look and feel of the app.
Price Range: $60k+
Enterprise Apps generally support 30+ screens, as well as complex integrations. Software within this price range have a long design phase that involves user shadowing and extensive procedure mapping, as well as a lengthy testing phase after production. Enterprise Software usually features both a web app and a mobile app that interact with each other. Consumer-facing apps expecting to scale up to a wide user base lie in this range.
Ongoing Maintenance Costs
Software costs always extend past the initial development cost to include server bills, general maintenance, and the addition of new features or changes over time. Maintenance to keep the software up to date and healthy generally costs 10-20% of the original project budget per year. Server costs lie between $100-$800 per month for simple software with limited users, while enterprise software can cost up to $5000 per month depending on complexity and the number of users.
